The Prodigy’s Breakthrough
Kwena Maphaka first announced himself at the 2024 U-19 World Cup, where he was named Player of the Tournament. He claimed a staggering 21 wickets at an average of 9.71, including three five-wicket hauls—a record in a single edition. His ability to spearhead the attack led to an early IPL call-up with Mumbai Indians in 2024, followed by a permanent move to Rajasthan Royals in 2025.
2025: A Year of International Records
The year 2025 marked Maphaka’s arrival as a global force. In January 2025, he made history as the youngest-ever Test debutant for South Africa at age 18 in the New Year’s Test against Pakistan at Newlands. Since then, he has become a regular across all formats. In August 2025, he claimed a career-best 4/20 against Australia in a T20I, becoming the youngest bowler from a full member nation to take a four-wicket haul in the format.
IPL 2026: The “X-Factor” for the Royals
For the 2026 season, Maphaka is expected to share the new ball with fellow South African Nandre Burger and veteran Sandeep Sharma.
