A raw and high-velocity right-arm pacer from the Thane district of Maharashtra, Onkar Tarmale (born August 22, 2002) is one of the most exciting “finds” of the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) scouting system. Clocking consistent speeds of 140–145 kmph, Tarmale’s journey from tennis-ball cricket in the small village of Shere to the bright lights of the IPL is a powerful story of perseverance and family sacrifice.

As of January 21, 2026, Tarmale is currently part of the Mumbai Ranji Trophy squad, having recently been called up for the clash against Hyderabad. Following an impressive trial where he caught the eye of coach Varun Aaron, he was secured by SRH for ₹30 Lakh in the December 2025 auction for the IPL 2026 season.

Onkar Tarmale: Career Journey & 2026 Breakthrough

The “University of Hard Knocks”

Onkar Tarmale’s path to professional cricket was paved with financial challenges. His father, Tukaram, a small-time farmer, mortgaged gold jewelry and took loans from local self-help groups (Mahila Bachat Gat) to fund Onkar’s training and travel. For years, Onkar traveled long distances daily from Shahapur to Mumbai’s maidans, a grueling routine that tested his physical and mental limits.

Breakout: T20 Mumbai & The Dhawal Kulkarni Influence

Tarmale’s potential was first recognized by former India pacer Dhawal Kulkarni during the 2025 T20 Mumbai League. Representing the Thane Eagle Strikers, Tarmale showcased raw pace that peaked at 145 kmph. Despite a finger fracture limiting his appearances, his performances were enough to earn him a trial with Sunrisers Hyderabad.

IPL 2026: The SRH “Pace Battery” Recruit

During the SRH trials in 2025, Tarmale suffered a hamstring injury but managed to bowl two high-intensity overs. That short burst was enough to convince bowling coach Varun Aaron, who noted a “unique snap” in Tarmale’s action. For the 2026 season, he is viewed as a high-potential domestic backup to Pat Cummins and Harshal Patel, capable of providing “hit-the-deck” pace in the middle overs.
